The Orphanage evokes deep sympathy for lost children. At the close of the film these disheveled children; these “lost boys” have finally found their Wendy. It is a remarkable thing that the film achieves to strike the viewer with horror and beauty in the same scene. The mind must flip back and forth between interpretations like in a Gestalt psychology puzzle. The mind cannot see the duck and the rabbit, the old and young woman at the same time. Why do we return to ghost stories? We live in a world haunted by a past we cannot fully know. We have our history but there is something always incomplete about history. It will always have its “lost boys” the weak and invisible do not always make it on the radar of the strong and successful, and yet they will haunt us. The lives of the lost will touch us uncannily, a discarded doll, a tin of baseball cards found under a floor board, treasures of the unknown. A film that can make us reflect on our situation a little more deeply in a haunting and heartfelt way, I will recommend highly.
