Let Me In is a beautiful nightmare. The film plays just the right notes of tenderness and terror. Of course it is based upon the Swedish film Let the Right One In which in some sense did not need to be remade. Let the Right One In captures just the same notes of tenderness and terror, and plays with the subtle balance between predator and prey equally as well as its American counterpart. Yet, I am thankful that the film was remade and with the location unmistakably in America. Some of the subtlety of Let the Right One In, in favor of a more tightly told tale and a greater emphasis on the predatory nature of the boy and girl’s relationship. The film drew me into a meditation on Original Sin. Violence is always already in the world, we are given no origin to violence and violence turns and spawns more violence. The young girl is clearly a victim, that she was changed into a vampire at such a young age bears the trance of her victimhood and yet she is also a predator. Even the aggressive bully at the school is the victim of his brothers bullying.
